This piece went through 5 different scrub-downs. Originally the foreground was dark and purple and dominated the composition, so I finally relented and scrubbed it off - one of those - make-it-or-break-it situations. Of course in this piece the buds have taken over the spotlight, much to the chagrin of the dazzling pinkish white peony who erroneously thinks that it's all about her! The other-worldly, exotic feel of this painting reminds me of waking from a dream in the middle of the night in a strange place. In these latest florals, I'm working hard at focusing on composition rather than making the flowers perfect - which is impossible with peonies - one can only hope to get the "feel" or the "essence" of a peony. My goal with this piece was to "stay loose" - to get the "essence" of my "feeling" of these peonies. This last Spring we had a bumper crop of peonies. We have about 12 plants of various colors. Love how the single leaf is trying to shelter the plums like a hen's wings over her eggs! I was blessed to gather plums from a tree in Gloria's back yard. My Paint-Out continues, but as a Paint-In. This wonderful small oil is a scene on top of Stevens Pass. The clouds were literally sitting on the mountain creating fantastic shadows and crazy highlights where the sun kissed the snow field. We found a fabulous lavender farm about 15 minutes up the road from where we are "camping." Yes, I know, this is not lavender. This was quite the interesting journey. Thursday morning we traveled to the Earth Sanctuary. A privately owned parcel of land with trails, ponds, bull frogs, herons, water lilies, meditation centers, and even a labyrinth. I happened on what is called a prayer wheel. This is another of my Ten Minute Challenge paintings. Each square is painted in just 10 minutes. It's a challenge designed to force artists to simplify, make decisions quickly, and "get 'er done"! This was particularly fun - this little figurine is an object I've used for many years in still life painting. She has a personality all her own and she doesn't mind sitting still! LOVE this! I had quite a challenge with this one. I thought I was losing it . . . just wasn't working, I rubbed off most of the image twice - then, all of a sudden - the image that wanted to be painted appeared and I just followed its lead! I wanted to do some plein air painting, but had only a short span of time, so set up my easel outside of my studio in the flower garden - sketched in some shapes and colors, and then gave it full rein and hung on for the ride. "Vineyard Harvest" is part of my Vineyard in Italy series. In this piece I tried to focus more on the leaf in the front than on the grapes. Ah, the colors of Italy. To paint an olive tree. I've seen olive trees in movies but to see them first hand is another thing entirely. They look more like large bushes with bluish green foliage. And to mix the color of the olive tree is truly a challenge. I like to take it more to the blue side of the color wheel as you see here. "Fall Light in Lucca" is a typical scene of Lucca. I was thrilled to finally be in Lucca since it is the setting of my novel I've been writing for over 5 years. In my imagination, the town was small and quaint, but in reality Lucca is a large city with its own unique personality. "Fall Morning in San Casciano" was a kick to paint. I loved pushing the paint around and leaving it on thick as butter. The color of many of the buildings is the color of real butter. I loved the contrast I got between these two buildings, one in sunlight, the other in shadow. While I was in Italy two friends did double duty at work to cover for me, so this and "Fall Light in Lucca" will be gifts

This is Tiny Treasure #84 and is another from Italy. This vineyard is part of the estate where we stayed just outside of Florence. The vines were just beginning to turn when we arrived and continued to get more colorful each day. This piece was also done as a commission.

This is Tiny Treasure #83 and is a view from Michelangelo Square overlooking Florence. Our group of painters spent the day here painting the Duomo and the bridges and of course I chose to paint other views as well. San Casciano was the first hill town we visited. Our Italian bus driver, Bruno, quickly became a friend and 'tour guide' to us all.
