Stash your stuff like a squirrel before winter!!

My friend and I left our paint boxes at home today and, knowing it would be a long cold winter, grabbed our cameras and headed to the great outdoors to gather reference material. I glanced at my camera and noticed it only showed 210 pictures remaining . . . but no time to delete images. Not to worry – I only shot 133 photos!

The afternoon was mild and sunny with shocking golds and reds plastered against a cerulean sky just asking to be preserved. We shot close-ups of leaves dancing on whirlpools, rock walls chiseled by rain and snow and clothed in moss, and little treasures like the shot above.

There’s still time to gather your stash like a good squirrel!
What will you paint when it’s 10 degrees out?

Lavender Dreams

"Lavender Dreams" was one of those paintings that paint themselves. As an artist, after many years of painting practice, you begin to recognize compositions subconsciously, so the different areas of the painting dictate to the artist where the next line, next color block, next stroke must go. You listen. You don't question. You just follow. And this is what happens!
This is from our Vashon Island Paint-Out this summer. Scroll down to view close-ups.
"Lavender Dreams" 12x12" pastel NFS for now

Vineyard Harmony

This is another piece I began as a plein air piece on Lopez Island last September, recently pulling it out to strengthen the composition and add more color. A group of us from the Northwest Pastel Society painted at the Lopez Island Winery, enjoying beautiful vistas, vines heavy with grapes and typical cool island weather. Grapes and vines are a favorite subject as they have infinite composition and color possibilities.

"Vineyard Harmony" is 15x15" pastel on LaCarte NFS for now

Fall Noon

"Fall Noon" is a painting that was begun about 2 years ago as I was painting with my nieces in the studio. I had set it aside when I put theirs away, and just recently found it again, and totally repainted it. The sun coming through a close window makes this simple bouqet glow. A perfect color piece for any room in your home or office. See the close-ups below.

Lopez Dance

"Lopez Dance" is a large pastel I began as a plein air piece on Lopez Island. I pulled it out and added more pastel to the surface, emphasizing the rows of color and the movement created by the stems. See several closeups of the painting below.

"Lopez Dance" 18x24" pastel on LaCarte $350.00 unframed.

Saint Laurent Crush

Our winery paint-out was fabulosity! 3 of us painted at Saint Laurent Winery on Friday, Oct. 2. What fantastic vistas! Three Lakes golf course lays below the winery. The mighty Columbia river winds around blue and purple cliffs. Friday I worked on a larger piece, 24x24" - of the pond with reeds and cattails - it needs a little more paint!

Then Saturday, during their Fall Crush, 2 of us set up our easels and painted as the guests enjoyed wine, music, and great conversation - learning all about the resident winemaker's secret to fantastic wines - while I painted the syrah grapes above. "Saint Laurent Crush" 12x12" oil on panel.

Grapes and vines are one of my favorite subjects - I love the design opportunities and the colors are always rich and challenging. This piece is not for sale at this time as I hope it may one day grace a wine bottle as a label! See a detail of the painting below.

If you are in the area, come out and crush some grapes, enjoy lunch with wine, live music and sensational views. We'd love to see you! Go past Three Lakes Golf Course, follow it around, turn right up Hamlin Road and follow it until you find the winery at 4147 Hamlin Road. We'll see you there!

Plein Air September

"Vin Du Lac in September" was painted in Chelan during the Music Fest and Wine Walk this last weekend! What fun everyone had - music, wine, conversation, laughter - loved it. I was signing my fine art print I created for the event (see http://lakechelanmusicfest.com/ to purchase a print or a T-Shirt). It was fabulosity to see my artwork spread all over town, on banners and on many chests! Between signings I went to Vin Du Lac, a winery/vineyard a short distance out of Chelan on the way to Manson, set up my plein air equipment between two rows of grape vines and painted this piece, above.

It's a fun, colorful piece that will bring movement and warmth into any room or office.

It is 12x12" oil on panel and sells for $200.00 unframed.

"Poplars Above River" This plein air piece was done between 3:30-5:00 in the afternoon. I love the horizontal light we have in our Valley. As I drove around looking for a spot to paint, this site grabbed me because of the composition - the tall poplars, the diagonals, and the wonderful just-about-Fall colors. I took artist license with the pink on the left, but the value is correct so it works. To emphasize the height of the poplars, I put in some apple trees on the left hand side.

"Poplars Above River" is 12x12" oil on panel and sells for $200.oo unframed.
